Boston: A City of Immigrants / Boston's Foreign-born Population Introduction

This map set is paired with two detailed, math-based lessons on immigration in Boston.

Lesson One: The first has students think critically about a 1850-2015 time series graph of the share of Boston, Massachusetts & United States population that is foreign born. The mathematics focuses on the use of percentage (or share) and number (or count) and how to calculate and communicate them. The lesson is designed for one 50-60 minute class with optional assessment and/or homework.

Lesson Two: The second lesson has students think critically about the 2015 foreign-born population data for Boston and its neighborhoods. The mathematics focuses on proportionality: calculating proportions from data sets and creating segmented bar graphs. This lesson is designed for three class periods of 45 to 60 minutes.

Both investigations were developed by Sharon Hessney; retired Boston teacher and graph curator,
writer, and moderator of the New York Times Learning Network’s "What's Going On In
This Graph?"; in response to the Leventhal Map & Education Center exhibition "Who We Are: Boston Immigration Then and Now" and in coordination with the Boston Planning and Development Agency Research Division.
