Plan of Boston
Item Information
- Title:
- Plan of Boston
- Description:
-
Published in the 1883 edition of Mitchell's "New General Atlas", this detailed plan of central Boston from the tip of Charlestown to northern Dorchester, records Boston's growth following the Civil War. By this time, infilling and the final street plan for the Back Bay was just about complete, while the extension of South Boston northeastward along Fort Point Channel into Boston Harbor was just beginning. The complexity of the rail network feeding into Boston is delineated in the accompanying inset depicting "...the Country around Boston..." The larger-scale city map shows the numerous lines terminating at multiple stations within Boston.
