- Chicago
- Description:
-
This map has been recently rebound to its original state of an atlas. Other examples have been dismantled with only one other known copy still bound. Chicago grew rapidly from the site of Fort Dearborn, originally built in 1803 following the Northwest Indian War and subsequent Treaty of Greenville. In 1833, with a population around two hundred people, Chicago was organized as a town and began to grow exponentially. By 1837, with a population near four thousand, Chicago was incorporated as a city and would emerge as a center for many industries tied together through the rapidly expanding railroad system in the 1840s and 1850s. Its unique geographic position on the eastern edge of the western frontier made Chicago an important starting point for prospectors, entrepreneurs, adventurers, and travelers of every sort going west. Chicago quickly became a major city in the emerging United States and was the world’s fastest growing city during the mid-nineteenth century. This map highlights the grid patterns of streets and wards, in different colors, developed by the General Land Office.
