Item Information

Title:
Bird’s eye view of Aspen, Pitkin Co. Colo. 1893
Description:
The term “bird’s-eye view” loosely describes a category of maps including aerial, illustrated, panoramic, perspective, and pictorial. This type of map originated in the second half of the fifteenth century, when there was a rising global interest in discovery and travel. More than mere sketches, these realistic city views, termed vendute, were the direct result of the technical innovations of Renaissance artists. The emergence of both linear and aerial perspective, as well as perfected techniques in etching and engraving, prompted new views revealing the layout, landscape, and architecture of world cities. By the mid-nineteenth century, bird’s-eye views were being used to document the effects of industrialization on the American landscape. This type of view became especially popular after the Civil War, when innumerable cities and towns were depicted in panoramas and aerial maps. These views were idealized, optimistic advertisements for progress and were therefore more commercial portraits than exact geographic perspectives. Aspen grew rapidly after silver was discovered in 1879. This bird’s eye view highlights the grid pattern of the streets in the mountain valley as well as the locations of mines, schools, churches and a racetrack.
