Title:
Plan de la ville de Genève : corrigé sur les lieux, en 1777, et 93 par Mr. Meyer ; dedié aux magnifiques et très honorés seigneures, sindic et conseil de la ville et république de Genève
Description:
This map of Geneva was created during the short period of independence between the city’s 1792 revolution to oust the Ancien Regime, and its annexation by France in 1798. With its inclusion of a map of Ancient Geneva, in the upper left-hand corner, and a map of Geneva in 1715 at the lower right, this map shows how the city developed from its ancient roots to its fortified state by the early eighteenth century. The extensive fortifications surrounding Geneva are immediately striking. In closed cities like this one, all buildings, except small structures for farming or animals, were concentrated within the city walls. Buildings were also often five or six stories high to remedy the limited amount of space. These colossal fortifications, among the most important in Europe, were the culmination of thousands of years of defensive development and kept the city walled until around 1850. This map shows the city on the eve of the nineteenth century, a time that marked the end of the era of defensive urban fortifications that dated back thousands of years.
