Item Information
- Title:
- Plan general de la ville du Caire
- Description:
-
In 1867 the Khedive (title of the ruler of Egypt from 1867-1914) of Egypt, Ishmael Pacha, traveled to Paris and studied the urban planning of Georges-Eugene Haussmann (1809-91). Haussmann had been appointed by Emperor Napolean III to transform Paris in a massive urban renewal program that included wide boulevards, parks and public works. Pacha was inspired to remake the City of Cairo using the principles implemented in Paris and so he brought back the engineer who had done the work in Paris, Pierre Grand, and a horticulturist to reshape Cairo. This map, created by Grand for Pacha, displays the changes made to the city by 1874, such as the Jardin de L’Ezekieh and the widened avenues along the waterfront. The Nile River, which runs north/south, is along the bottom of the map presenting east at the top of the map. The scale is 1:4,000 and the key on the bottom left lists, with corresponding numbers and letters, both Islamic and Christian religious buildings, including Greek, Armenian, French, English and German churches. The two hundred seventy-nine mosques are indicated in hatched red areas while the thirty-three churches and synagogues are indicated in hatched blue areas.
