Description:
Drawn by Fielding Lucas, a Philadelphia and Baltimore map and atlas publisher, this map was included in Henry Carey's and Isaac Lea's "Complete Historical, Chronological and Geographical American Atlas". The atlas was based on a French model by Le Sage (pseudo. of M. comte de Las Cases), in which individual map sheets carried sizeable marginal text describing the geography and history of the area portrayed. Also included in this marginal information were population statistics, in this case data for each county from both the 1810 and 1820 censuses with a note that Massachusetts "is the most thickly-settled state in the union." Henry Carey and Isaac Lea were successors to Mathew Carey, one of America's earliest publishers of atlases.
