Title:
Plan von Berlin mit nächster umgebung
Description:
In 1871, Berlin became the capital of the German Empire, which encouraged the city to continue the process of industrialization. The installation of railroads in the 1840s had transformed Berlin into one of central Europe’s most important rail hubs, and new telegraph lines allowed news and information to arrive quickly. Use of waterways also grew with new canal projects that increased transportation options. By 1877, the city had reached a population of one million people, most of whom were laborers who made use of Berlin’s improved transportation and communication systems. The map’s key, at the bottom left, makes note of these improvements, indicating railways, horse-drawn tram paths, telegraph offices, and police stations. The city also began modernizing during the late nineteenth century, with new Berlin beginning to unfold near the city palace on the boulevard Unter den Linden, seen in the center of the map. As the city’s population expanded, living conditions had deteriorated. In order to improve sanitation, the local government developed a sewer system and invested in parks and local wildlife, even encouraging the locals to plant trees. This map offers a look at Berlin at a pivotal time in its history, as it became an industrial powerhouse and a “model city” for the world.
