La piccola pianta di Roma

Topografia di Roma di Gio. Batta Nolli dalla maggiore in questa minor tavola dal. medesimo ridotta
Urbis ichnographiam a Leonardo Bufalino
Description:
Giambattista Nolli was an architect, surveyor, and cartographer in Rome during the eighteenth century. He gained renown in 1748 after publishing his highly accurate twelve-plate map of Rome, titled La Pianta Grande di Roma. This map was notable as it was one of only a few ichnographic plan maps of the city, rather than the more common birds-eye view maps. La Pianta Grande di Roma was the first accurate map of Rome since antiquity, and even today remains useful for understanding Rome’s historic center, which has changed little over the last 266 years. Nolli’s Grande Pianta was published with two smaller maps, which are displayed here. On the top is Nolli’s Piccola Pianta, a smaller version of his Grande Pianta, which includes engravings by the great Italian artist Giovanni Battista Piranesi. On the bottom is Nolli’s reproduction of Leonardo Bufalini’s 1551 map of Rome. Bufalini’s map was the first true plan of Rome since antiquity, and Nolli acknowledges his debt to the earlier cartographer in the title. By reproducing the original plan at almost the same scale as his own Piccola Pianta, Nolli invites viewers to compare the two maps and to conclude that his later edition is more accurate.
