Title:
Map of the city of New-York extending northward to Fiftieth Street
Description:
America’s oldest metropolis, New York City had a population of over half a million by 1850. The city played a crucial role in the United States economy, which forced it to grow rapidly and dramatically to accommodate the growing needs of the country during the first half of the nineteenth century. Located on the southern half of Manhattan Island, New York specialized in manufacturing and shipbuilding along the waterfront, with its extensive water access enabling commerce of all types. In 1811, the commissioners for the city decided on a grid that favored real estate development and John Randel (1787-1865) drafted the orderly plan of avenues and streets seen here. Central Park, the first landscape park in the US, was worked into the city plan five years after this map was produced as part of the residential development of the northern half of Manhattan. This map, used for a fire insurance company, is the first to show all of New York’s lots and buildings. It also includes hand drawn vignettes of many important buildings at the time including City Hall and Trinity Church. The vibrant colors and internal numbers on this map represent each district within the city, which did not encompass the boroughs of Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Staten Island until the end of the century.
