Plan of the city of Philadelphia

Item Information

Title:
Plan of the city of Philadelphia
Description:
This unique map was created for visitors, who came from all over the world to attend the 100th annual Centennial International Exhibition, an event that took ten years to plan and cost over eleven million dollars to produce. The exhibition coincided with the 100-year anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, which took place in Philadelphia. Philadelphia was developed in a grid-iron pattern, which allowed for similar properties and reduced dissension among the city’s founding population. Each color and number on the map represents a different ward in the city, many of which include small parks or cemeteries. It was not until the 1860s, however, that Fairmount Park acquired the 2800 acres of land that it occupies on this map. Highlighted in green along the Schuylkill River, Fairmount Park was the site of the Centennial International Exhibition fairgrounds. Drawn along the border of the map, are the most important buildings from the exhibition. Their exact locations and sizes are indicated in the key below the map title, underneath the map’s cover. Railroad tracks can also be seen across the map, connecting Philadelphia to other cities and nearby towns and further highlighting the city’s development in the 100 years since the Declaration of Independence was signed.
