<mods:abstract>Printed at the peak of the Golden Age of Dutch Cartography, this famous and influential map of the northeastern coast of North America was flattered by no fewer than twenty-seven copies published in Holland, England, and Germany by the end of the seventeenth century. It enjoyed phenomenal longevity, and was last published over a century after its first printing, by which time it was of little practical value. Jan Jansson, the son of a mapmaker and publisher, married into a leading Dutch publishing house. With his brother-in-law, he led the Hondius firm in a rivalry with the Blaeu publishing house that spurred Dutch mapmaking to its well deserved prominence.</mods:abstract>
