Transatlantic Slave Trade Antique Map
Many maps are great works of art as well as functional sources of information. This lesson, developed with Boston Public Schools art teacher Ida Vozzella for grade 5, uses a variety of modern maps showing the transatlantic slave trade and historic maps of Africa from the 1600s to the 1800s to inspire students’ own maps. After reading a biography of a slave who was captured in Africa and brought to America, students will then create a map of this transatlantic journey using many of the elements of the historic maps.
